What are the Valves Used in the Oil and Gas Industry?

Leo 2024-10-24

Valves are pipe accessories used to change the cross-sectional area and flow direction, and control the pressure, rate, volume and temperature of the conveying medium. They can open and close, control, regulate or isolate the flow.

The selection of the right valve type can improve efficiency, reduce maintenance costs and enhance safety.

1. Butterfly Valve

The main features of butterfly valves are easy operation, simple structure, small size and light weight. They are mainly used to regulate flow and as a cut-off device. Due to the simple structure and low manufacturing cost of butterfly valves, they have been widely used in the oil and gas industry.

2. Ball Valve

The ball valve is a valve that can be opened and closed quickly, and is mainly used to cut off or regulate the flow of the medium. The ball valve has a simple structural design, small size, light weight, easy maintenance and good sealing performance. It is a very important valve type in the petrochemical industry and is widely used in key equipment such as pipeline transportation systems, tank inlets and outlets, and reactors. The ball valve controls the on-off and flow of the medium by the rotation of the ball. It has the advantages of simple structure, reliable sealing and flexible operation. It is suitable for high temperature, high pressure and corrosive media.

3. Gate Valve

In the oil and gas industry, gate valves are a common type of valve. They are mainly used to open or close flow, but are not suitable for regulating flow. Gate valves provide a direct flow path, minimizing resistance to fluid flow. Gate valves are common and quite important in petrochemical plants. They are widely used in applications such as raw material processing, product separation, and pipeline cutting. Gate valves control the opening and closing of the medium by lifting or lowering the gate.

4. Globe Valve

Globe valves are mainly used to regulate flow, and can also be used to open or close the flow of fluids. When the globe valve is closed, the sealing surface between the valve seat and the valve disc is in close contact, which can effectively prevent medium leakage. Globe valves are one of the most common valves in petrochemical plants. They are widely used in key process processes such as raw material transportation, product processing, and system maintenance. Globe valves control the flow of the medium by opening and closing the valve to cut off, regulate, or allow the passage of the medium. Globe valves have the characteristics of good sealing performance, high temperature resistance, and corrosion resistance, ensuring safe and reliable operation of the system.

5. Check Valve

The check valve is mainly used to prevent the back flow of the medium. It automatically opens and closes based on the flow pressure of the medium, and can protect the safety of equipment and pipeline systems. In the process pipelines of the petroleum industry, check valves are often used to prevent the back flow of the medium and water hammer. Check valves mainly include spring check valves, inclined plate check valves, hemispherical check valves, etc. Among them, spring check valves have a long service life and good sealing performance.
